After graduating from LHES in 2010, Preston Asuncion moved to Oahu to pursue an engineering degree at Hawaii Pacific University. He ended up transferring to UH West Oahu and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in public administration.
Preston now lives on Oahu with his girlfriend and their daughter. He works as a police officer for the Honolulu Police Department. Luckily, COVID-19 did not impact his work and he is currently assigned to District 8 as a patrol officer.
Growing up, Preston always knew he wanted to be a police officer. He recalled dressing up as an officer for a class play in Mrs. Preza’s kindergarten class. According to Preston, training at the police academy was very intense. Recruits were challenged physically and mentally every day. After graduating from the academy, they had a few more months of training in the field with field training officers.
Preston’s mom, Adela, and many family members and close friends still live on Lanai, so he tries to return home once a year. When he’s on the island, he makes time for beach outings and relaxing fishing trips. If there is one thing Preston misses about Lanai, it’s the close community living– everyone is like family, always willing to help each other without hesitation.
When asked what advice he would give to Lanai’s youth today, Preston responded, “Be proud of where you grew up. Growing up on Lanai has played a big role in the person I am today. I would say not to limit yourselves in the things you can accomplish.”
