Teams from six schools (Lanai, Molokai, Hana, Seabury Hall, Haleakala Waldorf and St. Anthony) will compete in the tournament, held from Feb. 7 through 9 on Lanai.

“This is a great opportunity for our parents and fans,” said Roderick Sumagit, athletic director at LHES. “It’s our first time hosting on Lanai, so parents don’t have to travel and our boys have a home court advantage.”

A strong season

The tournament marks the end of a phenomenal season from LHES, currently in second place with a 9–2 record. The 13-man team is on the younger side, comprised of mostly sophomores with two graduating seniors.

When the Pine Lads take the court on Thursday at 7 p.m., they’ll have a shot at the MIL championship and state berth.

“If we win, we have an opportunity to go to states for the first time since 2008,” explained Coach Jimmy Fernandez. “

Lanai hosted a handful of games during the regular season, drawing a crowd of supporters to cheer them on. Sumagit and Fernandez believe having the tournament here at LHES will make all the difference in boosting the team’s confidence.
