Bienvenida Luz LaRotta!

Photo of Lanai teacher Luz Larotta with two children.

The new first grade teacher Luz LaRotta recently moved to Lanai on July 25. She moved to the island from Charlotte, North Carolina, but she is originally from Cartagena, Colombia, S.A. So far her transition into the school and community has been a joyous one – she appreciates the closeness of the elementary school and high school, comparing it to a “big family” that she is glad to be a part of.

This closeness is a quality Ms. LaRotta appreciates in the community as well, noting that there is a good mix of people in this small city. Ms. LaRotta, coming from landlocked regions, appreciates her new proximity to the ocean, and enjoys spending time on the beach or in the water snorkeling.

Ms. LaRotta maintains her connection with her home country by serving as the director of a foundation called Nuevavidacolombia.org. The foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life and providing resources for those less fortunate in Tierrabomba and Cartegena. The foundation meets immediate needs by providing food, clothing, education and professional training, counseling and fellowship for those in need.

If you have the chance to speak with Ms. LaRotta, welcome her to the island and ask her about her work in Colombia. We’re so lucky to have an international teacher educating our keiki and perpetuating the value of philanthropy.
