Hawaiʻi’s Endangered False Killer Whales: What we have learned from studies off Lānaʻi and elsewhere in the main Hawaiian Islands

Thursday, July 18 from 5:30-7 p.m.
Lānaʻi Public and School Library
False killer whales around the main Hawaiian Islands were listed as Endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 2012. This population has been studied extensively since 1999, when studies began off of Maui and Lānaʻi. Over the years it was discovered that the area to the southwest of Lānaʻi is a hotspot for one of the four social clusters from this population, and Lānaʻi-based research has been undertaken in a number of different years to better understand this population. Join Robin Baird from Cascadia Research Collective, a non-profit research and education organization, to learn more about false killer whale behavior and ecology, how this population is doing, and what they have learned from their ongoing research project.
