Lanai Cycles offers visitors the opportunity to explore Lanai City by bike.

Lanai Cycles is filling an adventure niche on Lanai. In 2014, founder Jeremiah Littlepage launched a guided bike tour company and a new way for guests to explore the island.

“Biking is a great way to experience Lanai; it is compact but there is much to see,” said Littlepage. “Our business aims to attract a special kind of tourist – those interested in experiencing local culture beyond the resorts.”

To serve visitors looking to get off the beaten path, Lanai Cycles offers small group and individual tours that allow the guides to create a personalized experience for each booking.

Filling the adventure gap

Littlepage was inspired to launch his business while working as a concierge at the Four Seasons Resort Lanai. Visitors frequently inquired about cycling options to tour the island but none existed. An avid biker himself, Littlepage saw an opportunity to establish an outdoors business venture and bought a fleet of Specialized Sirrus multi-use road bikes. He also worked diligently to develop a sound business plan, acquire appropriate permitting through the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), and establish a strong reputation with visitors to the island.

Fast-forward a couple of years, and today the company is co-owned by Littlepage and Lanai local Marcom Pascua. The two business owners became friends while working at Lanai City Grille, and Pascua became a business partner and lead guide for the adventure company when Littlepage moved to Los Angeles.

Littlepage currently works remotely to coordinate bookings and media relations for the company while Pascua leads tours and services the company’s fleet of bicycles. When larger groups book tours with Lanai Cycles, Littlepage flies to Lanai and serves as a guide alongside Pascua.

Supporting the Lanai community

In addition to sharing the untouched beauty of Lanai with guests, the Lanai Cycles team also believes strongly in bringing visitors to Lanai City so they can experience the small town charm of the shops and restaurants surrounding Dole Park.

“When we take our tours through Lanai City, we encourage guests to visit Mike Carroll’s gallery for art, the Local Gentry for a bit of shopping, or the various restaurants if they’re hungry for poke or other local favorites. There’s this really strong sense that businesses take care of each other and have your back, which is a wonderful quality about Lanai City,” said Littlepage.

Pascua echoes Littlepage’s sentiments and believes Lanai Cycles is a vehicle to give back to the community where he grew up.

“Entrepreneurship is a way for me to do something positive for the community and support other small businesses in town,” Pascua said.

What’s in store for the future

Lanai Cycles hopes to expand its business by developing more tours throughout 2017 and encourage more visitors to explore the island by bike. In 2016, Lanai Cycles had more than 300 cyclists take a tour and earned a five-star rating on TripAdvisor. They hope to build on that momentum in the years to come.
