The Kahiau Project
For the past 15 years, the Kahiau Project has been distributing gifts and new toys, clothing and food to families and individuals in need on Christmas Day. Kahiau means "to give generously and lavishly without the expectation of reward," and the program lives up to its name, providing holiday cheer for hundreds of families across the island.
If you know a family who may need assistance this year, please refer them to the Lanai Police Station for an application, or call (808) 565-8381. Two applications are available, one for families with children under age 18, and another for adults (singles or couples). Families may submit wish lists for their children to help Sgt. Masse match appropriate donations to each child.
Giving to the Kahiau Project
There are two ways to support families and individuals through the Kahiau Project:
As in years past, community members and friends will be able to pick an ornament bearing a family's "wish list" for their keiki and fulfill that child's holiday hopes. The ornaments can be found at the Lanai Police Station.
If you're interested in contributing a gift to the Kahiau Project, please follow these gift guidelines:
- Items must be new and unwrapped
- Toys, personal hygiene products and clothes are popular items
Please drop off all unwrapped items at the Lanai Police Station by December 15, 2019. If donors find they are not able to drop gifts off at the station, Sgt. Masse and her team are happy to pick them up. Donations are tax deductible. If you would like an acknowledgement letter for tax purposes, please include a note with your contribution.
Your support makes it possible for the Kahiau Project to purchase household items for Lanai's families in need, including senior households. If you're able to assist monetarily, please follow these guidelines:
- Monetary donations in the form of checks must be made payable to "Lanai Art Center." Checks can be mailed to:
c/o Maui Police Department – Lanai Police Station
P.O. Box 630626
Lanai City, HI 96763
- Cash is accepted and used to buy gift cards to Pine Isle Market and Richard's Market
Donations are tax deductible. If you would like an acknowledgement letter for tax purposes, please include a note with your contribution.
Please feel free to contact project coordinator Sergeant Kimberly Masse at (808) 565-8381 or (808) 559‑0289 for additional information about the Kahiau Project.
