Closed for Years, Lanai Theater Plans to Reopen in Late 2014

Saturday, February 08, 2014

For years, a poster for the film “Gone With the Wind” hung outside the Lanai Theater that seemed to tell the story of the theater itself and the movies that no longer play there.

But, soon, the community will enjoy a sequel. Before Festive 2014, a fully restored Lanai Theater will reopen to the public after closing in the 1990s. Lanai residents can expect something special. The restored building will have a duplex design that houses two theaters. The larger theater will be capable of seating an audience of up to 100 people, while the smaller lounge-style theater will hold between 50 and 60 people for more intimate viewings and performances.

Cutting edge digital projection technology will be used in both theaters, along with top end digital sound systems. Custom seating will add to the overall viewing experience.

A six- to eight-foot stage will be placed between the screen and audience in the larger theater, with a green room located offstage for lecturers or performers.

The box office and snack bar will be in the lobby, between the two theaters.

The theater’s exterior will be restored to reflect the character of Lanai in the 1930s, including the theater’s original “carpenter gothic” architecture with arched entry and dormer windows.
