The most recent La Hana Stewardship Day held at Waiaopae fishpond combined cultural education with sustainability initiatives accessible to all ages. On the morning of March 12, over 50 volunteers from Lanai and the Ka Ipu Kukui Fellowship of Maui County came together as a part of the effort to restore an ancient fishpond wall. In time, residents hope to reestablish Waiaopae as a working fishpond that will help feed the community and bolster local fish populations. The restoration is possible thanks to the hard work of the Culture & Historic Preservation department, and its partnership with Lanai Culture & Heritage Center, community volunteers, Four Seasons, Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center, Lanai High & Elementary School, and friends from across the state.
